Annella’s Story

Over forty years in the corporate world gave Annella Metoyer the opportunity to have many firsts—to be first in positions not held before by a woman or a person of color. Thus, Annella faced many adversities. As Michelle Obama once said, “Your experience and facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.” Here are some of the parts of Annella’s story that made her who she is today.

Her Father’s Inspiration

As a child, Annella listened to many conversations her father had with family members and friends about standing up and speaking out for change in their community. Though the language was Creole French, she understood the importance of the subject matter. Her father’s belief in making a difference set a path for Annella to overcome her fears and become the voice for others. Her book,Dare to Be the Change, is dedicated to her father because of the foundation he gave her—to take risks in life.

Early Days of Banking

In Annella’s early days of banking, she had the goal to stay five steps ahead of any project. To achieve this goal required working long hours and sacrificing many family events. But Annella knew that if she did well, she would open doors for others. Her drive gave her the opportunity to achieve many firsts—positions never held before by a woman or a person of color.

Leader in a Large Corporate Bank

As a leader for a large corporate bank, Annella led many initiatives that inspired leaders to mentor and develop others. She also initiated recognition programs that motivated employees to improve their performances and started coaching sessions that gave them the strength to speak up. Annella’s management style focused first on caring for the individual, and in addition, challenged them to move forward in their development. Annella was always looking for the diamond to polish those leadership qualities that people did not see within themselves. Annella believes that if you lift others up, doors will open for you.

Advisory Board Service

Annella passionately serves on the boards of numerous professional and non-profit organizations. Currently, a few noteworthy mentions are the North Houston Advisory Board of the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce (GHWCC) and the Women’s Resource of Greater Houston. She has also served on the board of the Greater Houston Partnership and the 2011 NCAA Final Four Houston Local Organizing Committee. The Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce named Ms. Metoyer to its “Breakthrough Women” class of 2013. In 2012, Ms. Metoyer was among the honorees at the 7th Annual Top 25 Women of Houston.
